Images to Music
Brief
When we were given this project to do, it took me a while to get into. Initial money problems/and music accessability was bad but when I finally got a hold of some tunes, I instantly had images appearing in my head.
Micheal Nyman: Since I’ve never heard of this artist before, it took a while before I had a piece of his that I reacted to. I chose Streets of Paris, since I felt a lot of motion in it. Instantly had images of cars, and trucks on motorways, trains, traffic and a lot of mechanical action. ~Images of assembly lines in futurama, near death star ep, or the starting titles cars/people in tubes~
But i also had images of the marks cars leave, light trails. I Remember a painting in highschool, up on the stairs, view of the A47 from trowse over pass. One blur of red and one of white. It was this kind of image I had, but not so fluent. A very stop and start kind of feel to it, the tediousness of a traffic jam, but sped up☺
These were the most enjoyable ‘shoots’ iv done. Learning how varying the exposure effected the pictures. Ranging from ones where the entire cars visable, with people walking about, to ones which were nothing bar an empty street and lights (that kind of reminded me of close encounters).
It was annoying though, that I couldn’t do any long exposures in daylight, I hoped to of got more of the people, and it would be interesting to see how the cars came out. Whether I’d get a mechanical blur, or just an empty street. Although the photos taken on viacarage hill and near the park were good, since it was a dusk, so the light was low enough to do long shots, but peoples lights were on so it looked like day time shots. They were interesting.
I wouldn’t mind going back and doing some more there at that time, since I kept moving the camera about. Iv been told of a uv filter though, that should help me with this problem.
Was great to have local participation, asking strangers to walk slower, so I caught their ‘ghosts’ as they walked by. It was an all together enjoyable task, bit of a confidence booster. It was also brilliant to go outside Victoria wines with my mates, and have them looking like astronaughts, walking extremely slowly back and forth.
I liked the green glow from this area, added by the specs of rain that had hit the lense.
Also little things you can get in shot, like the security camera in the background wizzing around, whilst everything else is moving at a slower pace, or the poster flapping about on vicarage hill. If i did this on a bigger time scale, you wud have the poster falling off and eventually being replaced.
Although I do feel that the enjoyment of this piece did effect my Vaughn Williams piece. I (and others) liked the finished clip of all these photos, since it went well with the music, and was ‘an interesting take on the selected music’. Contempory images for quite classical sounds. But I don’t think the clip movie idea was a great idea for Lark Ascendings, its too hasty. But I think I only went with that idea since I was stumped for any other original ideas.
Vaughn Williams: In my head Vaughn Williams was the easier of the two to churn out ideas for. Remember when dad used to play lark Ascendings to me as a kid, so the whole Norfolk countryside came springing to mind.
Surrounded by trees and water. But when put into practice it hasn’t come out exactly how I wanted it. Iv seen the stereotypical ‘morning due’ pictures/postcards of the countryside and they bore me to death. Unfortunatley these were the images I was getting.
Preferably needed to go out on a sunnier day, because I really enjoyed/reacted to the images of the sun coming through the leaves, how it was slightly blurred and looked like those army camoflage covers. I wanted a more 'magical' look to it, not so bland and boring. not like this>
I would also really like to get some more images of the leaves on the ground moving, rolling along the floor. No matter how long I stand there with a camera waiting, the gust of wind to move them wont come along until Iv moved on☺…but try try again.
I suppose that im not reacting to this piece as much as I thought I would. The music, I love, it really moves me. Especially the section iv chosen, since its kinda of the pinicle part of the piece. I can hear the movement, the trees swaying and streams flowing. Yet I cant quite seem to capture what it is I see in my head.
The best piece I think I had when I had experimented with some of my images on flash was the leaves, turning into the water flowing. This is a strong image in my head, which hopefully il be able to capture more clearly filming instead.
But the days on which I chose to shoot these images did greatly aid my understanding of using the
Cameras: I have never really used any form of camera other than my digital or old analogue, and even then they weren’t for a real artistic use, just memory logs. Still taking some getting used to, as im sure I could get some real beautiful shots in future with the Canon 10D's , I just need to find a subject matter that I can explore with.
Really usefull site for learning how to use these cameras
