Disertation preposal

Outline/Rationale for proposed dissertation topic:
I intend to look across the scope of media and how the advances in our understanding of film, photography, painting, architecture and many other areas of media, has aided our ability and need to create narrative worlds.
I shall begin approaching this subject by having a brief overview of the history of exploration. Looking most keenly on the renaissance and The Age Of Discovery. Why we originally explored the world and how developments in art at the time has aided our ability to create ‘realistic’ pieces of work. And how at the end of this period, the focus for discovering new worlds died down a lot, and became more focused on exploration within our own cultures and technology.
I also want to look into space and sea exploration. How the space race greatly affected the media at this time. The fact that Captain Kirk managed to get to the other side of the galaxy before we had even reached the moon, whilst Captain nemo has travelled further into the depths than we have yet to do. Looking into instances like these, I believe there is a key link between our development of technology and how media almost hypes up the possibilities that we are given by these advances. Almost giving people hope for ‘a greater explanation’.
There is also a psychological level on this subject that I wish to research; Humans need for discovery, and exploration. Whether we have run out of areas in which to explore on our earth until technology permits us to, and how these restrictions feed our imagination. Is it that we are lacking in imagination and need other people to create movies and games for us to explore, or are we at a peak in creativity?
Other areas I wish to explore more into is Gaming world (OMM’s, Rpgs, video games, Board, card…ect) and Theme parks. How by using more interactive forms of media, helps create a sense of realism.

Research Objectives:
To have a greater understanding of why we create worlds in Movies, Games, Theme Parks, TV….ect.
Why we have such a thirst to explore/escape.
Future possibilities for human exploration, and advances of realism in media.
